Part of what I think about when I consider MBs

I find so many aspects of monkey bucketedness fascinating, but one element that catches my interest early on is the creative process that must have been involved.

Why a MONKEY, in this instance? Is a monkey carrying a bucket more endearing than, say, a hippopotamus? Is it important to have selected a creature that is vaguely humanoid? Would a Great Dane do? Shaving a finer line, why a monkey rather than an orangutan or gorilla?

Were other creatures considered and discarded? And, is there a bestiary of bucket-carrying rejects somewhere?

I've been told that I was a questioning child, curious about the world around me... speaking in the way of a child not yet fully able to form sentences. So it wasn't "what is _____ ?" (fill in the blank) or "why does ________ happen?" It was always "do," as in "bicycle do?" or "kitty do?" or "sky do?" instead of "how does a bicycle work" or "where is the kitty going?" or "why is the sky there?"

And I still wonder things like that today... nearly half a century later. Who had the idea to sculpt a monkey? Why dress him in a colonial servant's uniform? What's he carrying in his buckets? Will people actually use him as a decorative item? And if he is used, what does the rest of the place look like? The world is full of monkey buckets, and I wonder about every one of them I encounter.
